#TLDR
Google Shopping ads are product listings (photo, title, price, store) that Google matches from your Merchant Center feed, not from keywords. You run them as Standard Shopping campaigns or as Performance Max with a Merchant Center feed. Google reports that retail advertisers who turn on AI Max for Shopping typically see about **5% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS** ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)). Historic WordStream-derived Shopping averages still used as planning floors include **$0.66 CPC, 0.86% CTR, 1.91% conversion rate, and $38.87 CPA** ([Store Growers](https://www.storegrowers.com/shopping-ads-benchmarks/)). Fix the feed first, then pick campaign type, then bid to conversion value.

Google Shopping ads are the product grid on Search and the Shopping tab. A shopper sees the photo, title, price, and store name before they click. Google builds that creative from [Merchant Center](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/google-merchant-center-complete-guide-2026) attributes, not from a keyword list you typed into an ad group ([Google Ads Help: About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).

That is the whole channel. Search ads compete on queries you write. Shopping ads compete on how well title, GTIN, price, availability, and image match the query. A weak feed produces a weak ad even when the bid is high. Pair Shopping with [performance marketing](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/performance-marketing-complete-guide-2026) measurement and [ecommerce CRO](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/conversion-rate-optimization-ecommerce-complete-guide-2026) on the PDP, or you buy clicks that bounce.

## What are Google Shopping ads?

Google Shopping ads are visual product ads. A shopper searching for a SKU sees an image, title, price, and your store name before they click. Google uses the product data you submit through Merchant Center to match the query ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).

You manage paid Shopping in Google Ads after you [link Google Ads to Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en). The same feed also supports free listings. Paid campaigns buy placement and reporting control that free listings do not guarantee ([Create a Shopping campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455481?hl=en)).

In Comparison Shopping Service (CSS) countries, you participate through one or more CSSs rather than only through Google as the comparison service ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).

**Feed vs campaign.** Merchant Center holds inventory, shipping, returns, and GTINs. Google Ads holds budget, bids, product groups, and campaign type. If you still need account setup, use the [Google Merchant Center complete guide](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/google-merchant-center-complete-guide-2026). This article is the paid campaign layer.

**Where this sits in a DTC stack.** Shopping is Google's product-grid buy. It is not a marketplace listing. [Amazon FBA](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-fba-complete-guide-2026) and [Walmart Marketplace](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/walmart-marketplace-complete-guide-2026) charge referral fees and own checkout. Google Shopping sends the click to your site, which is why [Shopify Plus](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-plus-complete-guide-2026) and [Shopify SEO](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-seo-complete-guide-2026) on the landing page matter as much as the bid.

Helena, Enrich Labs' AI marketer, is the operator we recommend first for this loop: feed diagnostics next to Google Ads spend, so a missing GTIN shows up as a campaign problem the same day.

## How Google Shopping ads work

1. You upload product data to Merchant Center (`id`, title, description, `link`, `image_link`, price, availability, and other required attributes) ([Product data specification](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en)).
2. Google matches shopper queries to those attributes.
3. Eligible products enter auctions as Shopping ads on Search, the Shopping tab, Images, and (if you include them) search partners ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).
4. You bid and organize inventory in Google Ads via product groups (Standard Shopping) or asset groups plus feed filters (Performance Max).

Google may enrich ads with landing page content, images, feed data, and Google AI content. You can opt out of those optimizations through your account manager. Google says requests typically process in 3 to 5 business days ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).

Billing for Standard Shopping is cost-per-click. You pay when someone clicks through to your landing page or to Google's hosted local inventory page ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).

**Match type does not exist here.** Product groups replace keywords. Custom labels (margin, season, bestseller, clearance) are how DTC teams encode profit, not just Google's taxonomy. That is closer to [product marketing](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/product-marketing-complete-guide-2026) than to classic [PPC agency](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/ppc-agency-complete-guide-2026) keyword maps.

**Creative is the feed.** Titles over 150 characters get truncated. Internal SKUs as titles fail long-tail match. AI-generated titles need `structured_title` with the trained algorithmic media flag ([Product data specification](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en)). EU, India, and New York rules can require AI-content labels on certain generated assets. Google's AI label setting does not guarantee legal compliance ([Product data specification](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en)).

## Google Shopping ads vs Performance Max

Google's own comparison is the one to use ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en), [About Performance Max](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817?hl=en)).

**Standard Shopping campaigns**

- **Surfaces:** Shopping tab, Search (next to results, separate from text ads), Google Images, optional search partners.
- **Formats:** Shopping ads, local inventory ads, vehicle ads.
- **Bidding:** Target ROAS, Maximize Clicks, Maximize conversion value, Manual CPC.
- **Creative:** Merchant Center feed (including optimized titles). Extra text, image, and video assets are not available yet in this campaign type.

**Performance Max with a Merchant Center feed**

- **Surfaces:** Shopping tab plus Search text ads, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Demand Gen, Maps, and new inventory as Google adds it.
- **Formats:** Shopping ads plus display, text, YouTube, vehicle, and local inventory ads.
- **Bidding:** Maximize conversion value (optional ROAS target) or Maximize conversions (optional CPA target).
- **Creative:** Feed plus asset groups (text, image, video). Audience signals, Final URL expansion, and a new customer acquisition goal are available.

Performance Max respects exact-match Search keywords in most cases. It can still show on branded queries if the Search campaign is budget-limited or tightly targeted. Brand exclusions and negatives are the control ([About Performance Max](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817?hl=en)).

If you want a feed-only PMax (Shopping formats without extra assets), skip text, image, and video during setup. Once you add manual assets, Google enforces minimum asset requirements and you cannot strip back to feed-only ([About Performance Max](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817?hl=en)).

Google lets you run a Standard Shopping vs Performance Max experiment so you can split traffic and compare conversions or conversion value on similar settings ([Shopping vs Performance Max experiments](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13825980?hl=en)). Community threads still mix Standard Shopping (PLAs) and PMax on the same catalog. That can work for control vs reach, but PMax often takes Shopping inventory when both target the same products. Treat overlap as a design choice ([r/googleads discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/googleads/comments/1jjd5r6/google_product_listing_ads_vs_performance_max/)).

For channel mix, keep Shopping next to [Amazon PPC](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-ppc-complete-guide-2026), [Amazon DSP](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-dsp-complete-guide-2026), [Pinterest Ads](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/pinterest-ads-complete-guide-2026), and [TikTok Shop Ads](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/tiktok-shop-ads-complete-guide-2026). Pinterest is visual discovery. TikTok Shop is in-app checkout. Amazon PPC is on Amazon's SERP. Google Shopping is high-intent Search with your URL as the destination.

## How to create a Standard Shopping campaign

Google's current create flow ([Create a Shopping campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455481?hl=en)):

1. New campaign. Objective: Sales, Leads, Website traffic, Local store visits, or no-goal guidance.
2. Campaign type: Shopping (or Google will offer Performance Max).
3. Select the Merchant Center account. You cannot change that link after create.
4. Optional: filter data sources by feed label. Vehicle feeds need approved vehicle offers.
5. Budget and bidding. Automated bidding is the default path; you can change it later. Daily budget or a total budget with start and end dates.
6. Customer acquisition: all customers (default) or new customers only.
7. Campaign priority: only if the same product sits in more than one Shopping campaign for the same country or feed label ([Campaign priority](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6275296?hl=en)).
8. Locations. "All countries and territories" still only shows where you sell.
9. Networks: Search and search partners on by default; uncheck partners if you want Search-only inventory.
10. Ad group name, optional Manual CPC ad group bid, optional product group filters.
11. Publish, then use Ad Preview and Diagnosis.

Local inventory ads will run by default in Shopping campaigns soon. Google tells advertisers who need separate online vs local budgets to review inventory filters before August 2026 ([Create a Shopping campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455481?hl=en)).

Shopify merchants can advertise from the same Merchant Center products. Google documents a Shopify-specific Shopping and PMax path ([Advertise products using Shopping ads for Shopify](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/13421604?hl=en)).

**Campaign priority rules** ([Campaign priority](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6275296?hl=en)):

- **Highest priority bids first,** even if a lower-priority campaign has a higher bid.
- **Same priority:** highest bid wins.
- **Budget leftover:** if High is out of budget (or holding budget for later in the day), the next priority can enter the auction.

Use High priority plus an inventory filter for a sale or hero SKU set. Leave the catch-all campaign on Low. Google recommends prioritizing only a subset, such as sale items ([Campaign priority](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6275296?hl=en)).

**Bidding path.** Standard Shopping supports Target ROAS, Maximize Clicks, Maximize conversion value, and Manual CPC ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)). Average target ROAS reporting is supported for Performance Max, Search, and Shopping ([About Target ROAS](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6268637?hl=en)). Start Manual CPC or Maximize Clicks only long enough to get conversion volume. Then move to Maximize conversion value, then add a ROAS target once value is stable. A target tighter than your last 30 days of actual ROAS usually starves volume.

Track that ROAS with [marketing attribution](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/marketing-attribution-complete-guide-2026), not last-click only. Shopping often assists branded Search and [abandoned cart email](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/abandoned-cart-email-complete-guide-2026). Fold the numbers into [CAC](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/customer-acquisition-cost-complete-guide-2026) and [LTV](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/customer-lifetime-value-complete-guide-2026) or you will cut a campaign that is actually profitable.

## AI Max for Shopping, benchmarks, and a 90-day plan

AI Max for Shopping is a beta suite on Shopping campaigns. It uses text customization (query-matched product titles from the feed; English feeds only today) and optional Final URL expansion (text ads and commercial URLs such as category or new-arrivals pages). Final URL expansion requires text customization and a Target ROAS bid strategy. Campaign priority applies to Shopping formats and text customization; it does not apply to Final URL expansion ([AI Max for Shopping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)).

Google's 2026 internal retail data: advertisers that activate AI Max for Shopping typically see about 5% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS ([AI Max for Shopping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)). Customized titles only serve when Google predicts they beat the original title. Example from Google: "Lounge deep 93" sofa" can also serve as "Made in USA 93" Deep Sofa" if that text is grounded in your data ([AI Max for Shopping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)).

If you use tracking templates, Final URL expansion can 404 when `{lpurl}` is missing or `{product_id}` expands empty on expanded URLs. Google's guidance is campaign-level templates that append parameters to `{lpurl}` ([AI Max for Shopping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)).

Store Growers' 2026 roundup still cites WordStream Q2 2019 Shopping figures and Sidecar ROAS tables. Treat them as historic planning numbers, not 2026 auction prices ([Store Growers Shopping benchmarks](https://www.storegrowers.com/shopping-ads-benchmarks/)):

- **Average Shopping CPC:** $0.66 (WordStream Q2 2019). Apparel $0.82, health and beauty $0.87, office $1.09.
- **Average Shopping CTR:** 0.86% Google / 1.25% Bing.
- **Average Shopping conversion rate:** 1.91%.
- **Average Shopping CPA:** $38.87.
- **Sidecar Q1 2020 ROAS examples:** apparel 3.47, health and beauty 4.15, jewelry 4.94, automotive 10.61.
- **Sidecar Q1 2020 retailer budget mix:** 80% Shopping / 20% Search.

Your margin and AOV decide whether those CPAs are viable. If AOV sits near $39, Shopping only works after you raise conversion rate or average order value. That is a [DTC branding](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/dtc-branding-complete-guide-2026) and offer problem as much as a bid problem. [UGC marketing](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/ugc-marketing-complete-guide-2026) on the PDP and [inbound](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/inbound-marketing-complete-guide-2026) content that names the product both lift Shopping CVR without raising CPC.

**Tools we use on Shopping accounts (ranked).**

1. **Enrich Labs (Helena).** Feed diagnostics, Google Ads spend, conversion value, and Slack alerts in one operator. First pick for a team that will not hire a full-time [PPC agency](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/ppc-agency-complete-guide-2026) for product groups.
2. **Google Ads + Merchant Center.** Source of truth for auctions and the feed ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)).
3. **GA4.** Assists and landing-page quality next to last-click ROAS ([marketing attribution](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/marketing-attribution-complete-guide-2026)).

See also our tests in [Best AI for Google Ads](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/best-ai-for-google-ads).

**90-day plan for DTC brands**

**Days 1 to 14: Feed and tracking.** Approve the Merchant Center catalog. Match price and availability to the PDP. Add GTINs where required. Set shipping and returns. Confirm purchase conversion value in Google Ads. Link GA4. Helena can sit on this checklist so disapprovals and conversion drops hit Slack the same day.

**Days 15 to 45: One Standard Shopping campaign.** Catch-all product groups by custom label (margin tier). Manual CPC or Maximize conversion value without a harsh target. Negative search terms for irrelevant queries. Exclude out-of-stock via feed, not by pausing thousands of SKUs by hand.

**Days 46 to 75: Structure.** High-priority campaign for bestsellers and high-margin SKUs. Low-priority catch-all. Optional PMax experiment against Standard Shopping with the same ROAS target ([experiment setup](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13825980?hl=en)). Do not duplicate the full catalog in PMax and Standard without a priority or filter plan.

**Days 76 to 90: AI and scale.** If ROAS is stable, test AI Max text customization on English feeds. Leave Final URL expansion off until tracking templates use `{lpurl}` correctly. Raise budget only on campaigns that hit target on conversion value, not on clicks. Tie scale to [demand generation](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/demand-generation-complete-guide-2026) and [growth](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/growth-hacking-complete-guide-2026) only after the feed is clean.

**Common failures**

- **Feed live, campaign still on free listings only:** no paid Shopping type, or Merchant Center not linked ([Create a Shopping campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455481?hl=en)).
- **Title is an internal SKU:** Google cannot match long-tail queries; AI Max title rewrites need a real English feed ([AI Max](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)).
- **Same SKU in PMax and Standard with no experiment:** inventory fights itself.
- **ROAS target copied from a Search campaign:** Shopping CPCs and conversion rates differ; use Shopping's own 30-day ROAS.
- **Local and online mixed after default local inventory:** split filters before August 2026 if budgets must stay separate ([Create a Shopping campaign](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455481?hl=en)).

## FAQ

**Do Google Shopping ads use keywords?**
No. Shopping ads use Merchant Center product attributes to match queries ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)). You still add negative search terms on Standard Shopping to cut junk queries.

**Should we run Standard Shopping or Performance Max?**
Standard Shopping if you need product-group and priority control on Search and the Shopping tab. Performance Max if you want extra surfaces (YouTube, Display, Gmail, Demand Gen, Maps) from one campaign ([About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en)). Test with Google's experiment ([Shopping vs PMax experiments](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13825980?hl=en)).

**What is a good Google Shopping ROAS?**
Sidecar Q1 2020 vertical examples ranged from about 3.47 (apparel) to 10.61 (automotive) ([Store Growers](https://www.storegrowers.com/shopping-ads-benchmarks/)). Use your contribution margin, not a borrowed target.

**Does AI Max for Shopping replace the feed?**
No. Text customization rewrites titles from feed and site content, English feeds only, and only when Google predicts a lift ([AI Max for Shopping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)). Garbage GTINs still get disapproved ([Product data specification](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en)).

**Can we run Shopping and Amazon PPC together?**
Yes. Different checkout owners and different auctions. Compare unit economics in the [Amazon PPC](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-ppc-complete-guide-2026) and [Amazon FBA](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-fba-complete-guide-2026) guides.

## Conclusion

Google Shopping ads are a feed-and-bid system. Merchant Center attributes decide relevance. Standard Shopping gives product-group and priority control on Search and the Shopping tab. Performance Max trades some of that control for extra surfaces. AI Max can rewrite titles and expand URLs, with Google's stated ~5% conversion or value lift at similar efficiency for retail advertisers who turn it on ([AI Max for Shopping](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/17091277?hl=en)).

Build the feed, pick one campaign type, bid to value, then test the other type in a formal experiment. If you want an AI teammate to run that loop, [start with Helena](https://www.enrichlabs.ai).
