# Google Merchant Center: Complete Guide 2026 | Enrich Labs

> Set up Google Merchant Center in 2026: Next UI, GTINs, shipping and returns, free listings, Performance Max, and the Merchant API sunset on August 18.

---

Google Merchant Center is the product catalog Google uses for Shopping ads, free listings, YouTube, Maps, and Performance Max retail. If the catalog is dirty, paid shopping burns budget on disapproved SKUs. If it is clean, the same feed powers organic Shopping tab placements and paid product ads without a second data pipeline.

This guide covers account setup, Merchant Center Next, required product attributes, GTINs, shipping and returns, Google Ads linking, Performance Max vs Shopping campaigns, Shopify sync, diagnostics, and the Merchant API cutoff on August 18, 2026.

## TLDR

- **Merchant Center is free.** You upload product data so listings can appear on Search, Maps, YouTube, and the Shopping tab. Sign up via [Get started with Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/12159157?hl=en).
- **Classic Merchant Center is gone.** Google upgraded all retailers to Merchant Center Next by September 2024, with Product Studio, unified analytics, crawled products by default, and Needs attention instead of Diagnostics. Sources: [Merchant Center Next upgrade](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/15285007?hl=en) and the [Google Shopping blog](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/tips-for-new-merchant-center/).
- **Shopping ads match on feed attributes, not keywords.** Retailers run Performance Max with a Merchant Center feed or standard Shopping campaigns. Source: [About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en).
- **Submit a real manufacturer GTIN when one exists.** Invented GTINs and restricted GS1 prefixes (02, 04, 2, 05, 98, 99) limit visibility. Source: [GTIN attribute](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en).
- **Return policies on the site must match Merchant Center**, stay public without login, and cover buyer's remorse, not only defects. Source: [Return policies for Shopping ads and free listings](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/14011730?hl=en).
- **Link Ads from Merchant Center Settings, Access and services, or from Google Ads Data manager.** A Merchant Center account can link to up to 500 Ads accounts. You cannot link an MCC. Source: [Link a Google Ads account to Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/12499498?hl=en).
- **Content API for Shopping shuts down August 18, 2026.** Move to Merchant API. Source: [Introducing Merchant API](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16493611?hl=en).

## What is Google Merchant Center?

Google describes Merchant Center as a free tool that helps shoppers discover, explore, and buy products. With an account you upload and manage product data so items can appear across Search, Maps, YouTube, and unpaid placements. A single Google Account email can create only one Merchant Center account. The country you pick at signup cannot change later. One user can sit on a maximum of 100 Merchant Center accounts. Source: [Get started with Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/12159157?hl=en).

The catalog is the source of truth for Shopping ads. Google uses campaign settings plus product data to build ads that show a photo, title, price, and store name. A title, price, or availability mismatch on the landing page is a policy problem, not a creative problem. Source: [About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en).

For DTC brands already running [Shopify SEO](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-seo-complete-guide-2026) and [Shopify marketing](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-marketing-complete-guide), Merchant Center is the retail layer that sits next to organic PDPs. Paid Shopping and free listings both read the same SKUs. Pair that with [DTC branding](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/dtc-branding-complete-guide-2026) so titles and images match the brand shoppers already know.

## Merchant Center Next vs classic Merchant Center

In August 2024 Google announced the full rollout of Merchant Center Next and said all retailers would be upgraded by September. The new UI added insights reports, generative AI imagery via Product Studio, and simpler navigation. Source: [Merchant Center Next: Upgrading all retailers by September](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/15285007?hl=en).

Jeff Harrell, Senior Director of Merchant Shopping, wrote that of existing online merchants who moved, Google saw higher retention and engagement, and 25% more omnichannel merchants added product offers in the new experience (Google Internal Data, 2023). Product Studio is available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and Japan. Google reported that 80% of merchants who use Product Studio see it as an efficiency builder (MSAT survey, n=149, US, March 2024), and one in three generated product images were published or downloaded (Google Internal Data, global, April 24, 2024). Source: [What retailers can expect from the new Merchant Center](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/tips-for-new-merchant-center/).

Practical UI swaps you will hit every week:

- **Destinations becomes Marketing methods**
- **Feeds becomes Data sources**
- **Diagnostics becomes Needs attention**, under Products
- **Online and local SKUs sit in one product list**
- **Website crawl adds products by default**, on top of the data sources you already upload
- **Supplemental feeds and feed rules still exist**, often as add-ons in Settings

## How to create a Google Merchant Center account

Go to the [Merchant Center](https://merchants.google.com/) sign-in page with a Google Account that is not already tied to another Merchant Center. Google's signup flow asks four things:

1. **Business profile:** store name, hours, services, address. Time zone follows the country on the business address.
2. **Checkout options:** online, in-store, or both.
3. **How products get into the account:** automatic crawl of the store, manual upload, or a platform link such as Shopify.
4. **Third-party platforms you already use.** Linking Shopify syncs products into the Products section.

If signup fails, Google's troubleshooting is blunt: create a new Google Account, confirm admin access, and complete business information. Source: [Get started with Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/12159157?hl=en).

Do this before you request Ads linking:

- **Claim and verify the website** Google shows in the account.
- **Put shipping, returns, refunds, privacy, and a real contact path** in the site footer with no login wall.
- **Serve the store on HTTPS.**
- **Make prices, currency, and tax treatment match** what you will put in the feed.

Misrepresentation suspensions often start here, not in the XML. Keep Merchant Center fields identical to the live store. Pair this with [ecommerce CRO](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/conversion-rate-optimization-ecommerce-complete-guide-2026) so the landing page the Shopping click hits actually converts. Track payback with [customer lifetime value](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/customer-lifetime-value-complete-guide-2026), not click volume.

## Product data sources and required attributes

You can send product data as a text feed, XML feed, or API. Google's product data specification is the rulebook for every attribute. Identifier rules are strict: product identifiers (GTIN, MPN, brand) are required in the cases Google lists; MPN is required only if the product does not have a manufacturer-assigned GTIN. Source: [Product data specification](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en).

Minimum fields most DTC catalogs need on every offer:

- **id:** stable SKU-level ID. Do not recycle IDs when you relaunch a colorway.
- **title and description:** match the PDP. Google can enrich ads from the landing page, images, feed, and Google AI unless you opt out through an account manager (requests typically take 3-5 business days). Source: [About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en).
- **link and image\_link:** crawlable HTTPS URLs.
- **availability and price:** must match the landing page at serve time.
- **brand, plus gtin and/or mpn.**
- **condition:** new, refurbished, or used.
- **Apparel extras:** color, size, gender, age\_group.
- **Shipping:** country, price, and transit, or account-level shipping services that cover every target country.

Data sources can stack. A primary Shopify or Content API source holds the catalog. A supplemental source patches custom labels, sale prices, or GTIN cleanup without rewriting the platform export. Feed rules still rewrite attributes at ingest. Treat crawled products as a complement, not a replacement, or you will get duplicate offers with weaker titles than your curated feed.

For brands also selling on Amazon, keep GTINs consistent with [Amazon PPC](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-ppc-complete-guide-2026) and [Amazon DSP](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/amazon-dsp-complete-guide-2026) so the same UPC does not map to two different products. Title quality belongs with [product marketing](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/product-marketing-complete-guide-2026), not keyword stuffing.

## GTIN, MPN, and brand rules

A GTIN is a UPC (GTIN-12), EAN or JAN (GTIN-13), ISBN-13, or ITF-14. Format is numeric; spaces and dashes are ignored. Length must be 0, 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits. You may repeat the field up to 10 times (for example UPC plus ISBN). Source: [GTIN \[gtin\]](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en).

Google's minimums:

- **If the manufacturer assigned a GTIN, submit it.** Missing or wrong GTINs can limit visibility.
- **Check digit must pass the GS1 calculator.**
- **Do not use restricted prefixes 02, 04, or 2, or coupon prefixes 05, 98, or 99.**
- **Do not invent a GTIN.** Store brands and unique-to-you products often have none; skip the attribute and send brand plus MPN instead.
- **Each variant (size, color) gets its own GTIN.**
- **Do not submit two offers for the same country and language** that share a GTIN and the same variant attributes.

Bundles and multipacks follow who created the pack. Manufacturer bundle: send the bundle's GTIN, MPN, and brand. Merchant-created bundle: send identifiers for the main product. Custom engraving still uses the manufacturer GTIN and should be called out in title and description; use is\_bundle when customization is included. Source: [GTIN attribute](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en).

## Shipping, returns, and website policy match

Return policy is a ranking and trust signal on ads, listings, and Gmail. Google may scrape a general policy from the site. If ads say the policy applies For most items, Google inferred it. Upload a verified policy to replace that notation. Uploaded, verified policies take precedence over crawled text. Source: [Set up your return policies](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/14011730?hl=en).

Website requirements Google lists:

- **Clear refund and return information**, including buyer's remorse, not only defects.
- **Accessible without login, signup, or personal data.**
- **Consistent in the footer, returns page, banners, and Merchant Center.**
- **Stated return window, method, and fees.**

You can also manage shipping or return policies in Search Console. If they already live there, edit in Search Console or in Merchant Center. Source: [Return policies](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/14011730?hl=en).

In Merchant Center, go to Shipping and returns under Products and store, then Return policies, then Add return policy. The flow asks for policy URL, countries, whether you accept returns and exchanges, product condition, return window (days or lifetime), holiday window extensions, return method (in store, drop-off, mail), restocking fee, and refund processing time. Exception policies get a return\_policy\_label you attach on the feed. Status values are Verified, Pending, or Rejected. Source: [Return policies](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/14011730?hl=en).

Shipping services must cover every country you target. A $0 feed shipping price against a $12 PDP checkout is a misrepresentation issue. Align this with [ecommerce marketing automation](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/ecommerce-marketing-automation-complete-guide-2026) so promo prices in email do not drift from the Shopping feed. [Abandoned cart email](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/abandoned-cart-email-complete-guide-2026) sequences should quote the same price Google already showed.

## Free listings vs Shopping ads vs Performance Max

Free listings use the same catalog for unpaid Shopping tab and Search surfaces. Paid Shopping ads and Performance Max retail campaigns use the same feed plus bids. Google's retail ads help is explicit: upload products to Merchant Center, then create the campaign and link Ads. Sources: [Shopping ads overview](https://business.google.com/en-all/ad-solutions/shopping-ads/) and [Free listings for products](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/13889434?hl=en).

Performance Max vs standard Shopping, per Google Ads:

- **PMax can serve Shopping, Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Demand Gen, and Maps (local inventory).** Shopping campaigns stay on the Shopping tab, Search product listings, Images, and optional search partners.
- **PMax bidding:** Maximize conversion value (optional tROAS) or Maximize conversions (optional tCPA). Shopping: tROAS, Maximize clicks, Maximize conversion value, or Manual CPC.
- **PMax builds extra formats from asset groups plus the feed.** Shopping ads are feed-only.
- **Local inventory ads opt in automatically on PMax** when a local feed is attached. Shopping needs a campaign checkbox.

Source: [About Shopping ads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022?hl=en). In CSS program countries you buy Shopping through a Comparison Shopping Service. Source: same article.

For channel mix, treat Shopping as the product-intent layer next to [Google Ads tooling](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/best-ai-for-google-ads-2026), [Meta Ads](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/meta-ads-benchmarks-2025), and [TikTok Shops](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/tiktok-shops-complete-guide). Measure incremental CAC with the same math as [customer acquisition cost](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/customer-acquisition-cost-complete-guide-2026) and [marketing attribution](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/marketing-attribution-complete-guide-2026). If you outsource buying, read the [PPC agency](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/ppc-agency-complete-guide-2026) guide before you hand over the Merchant Center admin.

## Link Google Ads to Merchant Center

You must link the accounts before you can create Shopping or PMax retail campaigns. Clear account-level policy violations first. Google recommends 2-Step Verification on the Google Account. Source: [Link a Google Ads account to Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/12499498?hl=en).

From Merchant Center: Settings, Access and services, Apps and services, Add service, Google Ads. Link an account you own, create a new Ads account (time zone and currency lock after creation), or send a request with a customer ID for an agency account. The Ads admin approves under Tools, Data manager, Google Merchant Center, Received.

From Google Ads: Tools, Data manager, Google Merchant Center. If you are admin on both, the link auto-approves. Otherwise Merchant Center admins accept under Access and services.

Caps and gotchas Google documents:

- **A Merchant Center account links to up to 500 Google Ads accounts.**
- **A Business Manager links to up to 20 Google Ads accounts.**
- **You cannot link an Ads manager (MCC) account to Merchant Center.**
- **One campaign links to one Merchant Center account.** Switch catalogs by creating a new campaign.
- **Unlinking stops product-based serving.** Other campaign types keep running.

Data shared from Merchant Center: account name and ID, product titles, descriptions, images. Data shared from Ads: account name and ID, clicks and conversions. Source: [Link help article](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/12499498?hl=en).

**1\. Enrich Labs (Helena).** Helena sits on the Google Ads side of this link: budgets, RSA and PMax creative, negatives, and daily CPA watch. Merchant Center remains the catalog system of record. That split keeps feed ops and media buying from stepping on each other. Start at [enrichlabs.ai](https://www.enrichlabs.ai). Compare that operating model in [Helena vs an AI marketing agency](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/helena-vs-ai-marketing-agency-2026).

## Shopify and other platform sync

During signup, Google lets you link Shopify so products sync into Merchant Center automatically. You can still edit or add SKUs in the Products section. Source: [Get started with Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/12159157?hl=en).

Shopify merchants still fail reviews when:

- **Variant barcodes never reach the GTIN field.**
- **Compare-at price on Shopify is not the Shopping sale price Google expects.**
- **Markets and domains send the wrong canonical PDP for a country.**
- **Theme apps inject prices that differ from the feed.**

Use a supplemental source for custom labels (margin, hero SKU, clearance) rather than forking the Google and YouTube app feed. Keep collection crawl and PDP uniqueness in line with your [Shopify SEO](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-seo-complete-guide-2026) work so Shopping landing pages do not duplicate thin variants. For store ops, see [how to sell on Shopify](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/how-to-sell-on-shopify-complete-guide), [Shopify marketing automation](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-marketing-automation-complete-guide), and [Shopify benchmarks](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/shopify-benchmarks-2025).

## Diagnostics, disapprovals, and suspensions

In Next, open Products, Needs attention. Google now ranks issues by potential impact. Work top-down: account suspensions first, then item disapprovals that block serving, then warnings that limit impressions.

High-frequency item issues:

- **Missing or invalid GTIN, brand, or MPN.**
- **Image too small, watermarked, or lifestyle-only** with no identifiable product.
- **Price or availability mismatch** versus the landing page.
- **Adult, weapons, healthcare, and other restricted categories** without the right attributes.
- **Identifier exists / conflict** when two offers share a GTIN.

Account-level misrepresentation is the expensive one. Google expects business name, contact, shipping, and returns to match the live site. Appeals without a policy URL change usually bounce. After a fix, request review and wait; do not spam the appeal form.

Track product-level clicks and conversion value in Ads and in Merchant Center analytics (pricing reports, competitive visibility, retail Search trends). Google's 2024 merchant survey (n=209, June 15 to July 9, 2024) reported high satisfaction with insights and reporting among surveyed users. Source: [Google blog footnotes](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/tips-for-new-merchant-center/).

If Shopping CAC climbs, pull the same payback math you use for [go-to-market](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/go-to-market-strategy-complete-guide-2026), [product-led growth](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/product-led-growth-complete-guide-2026), and [churn](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/churn-rate-complete-guide-2026) rather than raising PMax budget on a broken feed.

## Merchant API and the Content API sunset

In August 2025 Google made Merchant API generally available and named it the primary programmatic interface, replacing Content API for Shopping. Content API access continues until August 18, 2026, then it shuts down. Source: [Introducing Merchant API](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16493611?hl=en). Google's shopping samples repo repeats the same cutoff and tells developers to use Merchant API. Source: [googleads-shopping-samples](https://github.com/googleads/googleads-shopping-samples).

If an agency or middleware still posts to Content API v2.1, put the migration on the calendar before August 2026. Merchant API is also how you can share return policies programmatically. Source: [Return policies](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/14011730?hl=en).

Google is also documenting Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) on top of existing Merchant Center feeds for agentic checkout. Prepare global return policies, customer support info, and a clean feed if you plan to join that waitlist. Sources: [Prepare your Merchant Center account for UCP](https://developers.google.com/merchant/ucp/guides/overview/merchant-center) (dated August 25, 2026) and [About UCP](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16837055?hl=en).

## 90-day Merchant Center plan

**Days 1-14: Account and policy.** Create or confirm the Next account, verify the website, lock country and currency, publish public shipping/returns/contact pages, upload return policies, configure shipping services, link Shopify or your primary data source, link Google Ads.

**Days 15-45: Catalog quality.** Fix Needs attention in impact order. Backfill GTINs. Split variants. Add supplemental custom labels for margin and bestsellers. Turn on free listings. Launch a constrained PMax retail campaign on in-stock, high-margin SKUs only. Compare product titles against [product marketing](https://www.enrichlabs.ai/blog/product-marketing-complete-guide-2026) naming, not stuffed keyword titles.

**Days 46-90: Scale and automation.** Expand product groups or PMax asset groups. Add local inventory if you have stores. Migrate any Content API jobs to Merchant API. Use Product Studio only as a supplement to real packshots. Point an AI agent such as Helena at Ads pacing and query negatives while humans own feed policy. If you want that split without hiring another retail media analyst, [get a Helena demo](https://www.enrichlabs.ai).

## How Helena fits next to Merchant Center

Merchant Center is Google's catalog. Helena is the marketing operator on paid and organic work around it: Google Ads, Meta, creative, and reporting. Enrich Labs builds AI specialists so a lean DTC team can keep the feed honest and still run media. Use Helena for campaign hygiene and creative tests. Keep GTINs, shipping, and appeals in Merchant Center or your ops stack.

## FAQ

**Is Google Merchant Center free?** Yes. Creating an account and running free listings does not require an Ads budget. Shopping ads and Performance Max charge when someone clicks or Google records the billed event. Source: [Get started with Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/12159157?hl=en).

**Do I still need a feed if Google crawls my site?** Yes, for most catalogs. Crawl is on by default in Next, but curated data sources plus GTINs still produce cleaner offers than crawl-only titles. Source: [Merchant Center Next upgrade](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/15285007?hl=en).

**Can I invent a GTIN for a private-label SKU?** No. Skip GTIN and send brand plus MPN when the manufacturer never assigned a GTIN. Restricted prefixes and invented numbers hurt visibility. Source: [GTIN attribute](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en).

**Why did my Shopping ads stop after I unlinked Ads?** Unlinking stops product-based serving. Other campaign types keep running. Source: [Link a Google Ads account to Merchant Center](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/12499498?hl=en).

**When does Content API die?** August 18, 2026. Merchant API is the replacement. Source: [Introducing Merchant API](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16493611?hl=en).

## Conclusion

Google Merchant Center is the product database behind free listings and Shopping ads. Next is the only UI. GTINs, price match, and public return policies decide whether SKUs serve. Link Ads, prefer Performance Max when you want inventory beyond the Shopping tab, and finish the Merchant API migration before August 18, 2026. Clean the catalog first. Then spend.
