## TLDR

- **ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear below ChatGPT responses.** OpenAI began testing them in the US on February 9, 2026. They are now available in more than 40 countries.
- **Only some users see them.** Ads appear on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none, and neither do accounts identified as under 18 or Temporary Chats.
- **You buy them in OpenAI Ads Manager.** Self-serve opened to small and medium businesses in May 2026 and reached India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa on August 31, 2026.
- **Helena can set up and monitor your ChatGPT ads.** [Helena](/ai-marketing-agent), the AI marketing agent from Enrich Labs, connects to your ChatGPT Ads account and handles drafting, launch checks and reporting next to your Meta and Google campaigns.
- **Pricing is bid-based.** You can buy Views (impressions), Clicks, or Conversions. OpenAI uses a relevance-weighted, second-price auction and suggests starting CPC campaigns with a maximum bid of $3 to $5.
- **Ads do not change ChatGPT's answers.** If you want your brand mentioned inside the answers themselves, that is [generative engine optimization](/blog/generative-engine-optimization-geo-complete-guide-2026), a separate discipline.

## What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown inside ChatGPT, below the end of a response. OpenAI describes the goal as reaching people while they explore options, compare choices and make decisions in a single conversation.

An ad is selected using the context of the current conversation. When a user has ad personalization turned on, the system can also use signals from their wider ChatGPT experience, such as past chats and memory. Advertisers do not see conversations, chat history, memories or personal details. They receive aggregated performance data such as views and clicks.

OpenAI also states that ads run on separate systems from the chat model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. Ads are labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer.

## What do ChatGPT ads look like?

An ad unit sits under the response and is clearly marked as sponsored. According to OpenAI's advertiser documentation, each ad includes:

- Advertiser name
- Favicon (the advertiser's logo)
- Title (headline)
- Copy (description)
- Landing page
- Image asset (creative)

During the test, a user may see one or more ad units under a response when there is a relevant match, and a unit can contain items from one advertiser or several. Ads do not appear in the ChatGPT Atlas browser during the test.

If you want to see one yourself, you need a Free or Go account in a supported region, and the conversation has to be one where an advertiser's targeting matches. Ads are not eligible near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health or politics.

Free users can switch to an ad-free experience in Settings under Ads controls. It removes ads in exchange for lower message limits and reduced access to some tools. Users can also turn off ad personalization, hide or report an ad, see why they were shown it, and clear their ads data.

For advertisers, this means your reach is the free and lower-priced tiers. CNBC reported on August 31, 2026 that this free tier makes up the vast majority of ChatGPT's 1 billion weekly active users.

## How ChatGPT ads work

OpenAI says its system selects ads based on expected relevance and outcomes. It considers:

- The context and intent of the current conversation
- The ad's landing page, title and copy
- Context hints and targeting selections you provide
- When personalization is on, select signals from the user's broader ChatGPT experience

**Context hints** are the closest thing to keywords. At the ad group level you describe the conversations, topics or keywords where your product may be relevant. OpenAI is explicit that hints guide matching but are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations. If you are used to [Google Ads keyword match types](/blog/google-ads-mcp-2026), plan for looser control.

When several ads are eligible, OpenAI weighs relevance and advertiser bids, using a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. A relevant ad with a lower bid can beat a poorly matched ad with a higher one.

## ChatGPT Ads Manager: what it is and where it is available

OpenAI Ads Manager is the self-serve platform at ads.openai.com. The timeline from OpenAI's own announcements:

- **February 9, 2026:** ad testing starts in the United States.
- **May 2026:** Ads Manager opens the platform to small and medium businesses. OpenAI says SMBs now represent a material share of the business.
- **August 18, 2026:** expansion to 31 European markets, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria.
- **August 31, 2026:** self-service access launches across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. ChatGPT Ads is available in more than 40 countries through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team and its agency and technology partners.

Availability is country by country. If Ads Manager is not open in your country, you can create an account and OpenAI will notify you when it becomes available, but creating an account does not give you early access. Check OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page for the current list.

OpenAI's reporting in Ads Manager Beta currently includes impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Impressions, clicks and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes. Spend can be delayed by 7 to 8 hours, so a spend figure of zero does not prove you have not been charged.

## How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

There is no published rate card. You set bids and budgets, and the auction sets the price. OpenAI supports impression and valid-click billing:

Campaign objective

You pay for

Bid strategy options

Views (Reach)

Impressions (CPM)

Fixed bid

Clicks

Valid clicks (CPC)

Fixed bid, or Maximize clicks

Conversions

Valid clicks (oCPC)

Fixed bid, or Maximize conversions

A few details from OpenAI's documentation that affect cost:

- **CPC campaigns:** OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 USD per click. Ads Manager can show bid-strength guidance that signals whether your bid is likely to be competitive or may limit delivery.
- **Conversion campaigns bill for clicks, not conversions.** They optimize toward one standard conversion event that you select. Custom events cannot be optimization goals.
- **Maximize Results** lets OpenAI adjust bids toward clicks or conversions inside your daily budget.
- **Budgets** can be daily or lifetime for fixed bids. Maximize Results requires a daily budget. Minimum budgets vary by currency, so check the floor in Ads Manager when you create a campaign.
- **Google CPC data is a proxy at best.** Keyword tools show Google Ads bids for searches about ChatGPT ads, which says nothing about what ChatGPT's own auction will charge you.

Because pricing is auction-based and the platform is under 8 months old, we recommend setting a small test budget, reading your own average CPC after the first week, and building from that number instead of any benchmark you read online. Helena tracks your average CPC and cost per conversion every week, so you work from your own numbers without exporting reports.

## How to run your first ChatGPT ad campaign

1. **Create an account at ads.openai.com** and confirm Ads Manager is available in your country.
2. **Set up conversion measurement before you launch.** OpenAI provides a Measurement Pixel for web pages, a Conversions API for server-to-server events, and an image tag. Without events, you can only optimize toward clicks.
3. **Start with a Clicks objective.** It teaches you your real CPC and click quality. Move to a Conversions objective once you have enough events flowing.
4. **Set a bid and budget.** For a fixed-bid CPC campaign, begin around the $3 to $5 range OpenAI suggests, then watch bid-strength guidance and adjust.
5. **Choose targeting.** You can target by country or region, by platform (ChatGPT web, iOS app or Android app), and by custom audiences, and you can exclude audiences. Exclusions win when someone is in both an included and an excluded audience.
6. **Write context hints.** Describe the conversations and topics where your product is relevant, in plain language. Think in terms of the questions your buyers ask ChatGPT, not exact keywords.
7. **Build the ad.** Write a clear headline and description, add your logo and an image, and send traffic to a landing page that matches what the ad promises. The system reads your landing page, so a vague page weakens relevance.
8. **Add UTM parameters** to your landing page URL so ChatGPT traffic shows up in your analytics tool.
9. **Review and iterate.** New campaigns are created paused so you can finish setup before delivery starts. After launch, check delivery guidance such as bid-too-low flags before you judge performance.

### Skip the manual setup with Helena

[Helena](/ai-marketing-agent) connects to your ChatGPT Ads account and takes those chores on. It drafts campaign structure, context hints and ad copy from your landing pages, adds consistent UTM parameters, and reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC and conversions in plain language. ## What results are advertisers reporting?

The public evidence is early and mostly comes from OpenAI and its partners, so treat it as directional:

- OpenAI said on August 31, 2026 that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days and is used by tens of thousands of advertisers (CNBC reported the same milestone).
- OpenAI cited an ecommerce advertiser that achieved a 3x return on ad spend across its campaigns over 28 days.
- OpenAI said a technology partner reported that more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.
- OpenAI says CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now account for the majority of campaigns.

These are vendor-reported figures with no methodology attached. We have no first-party campaign data to add here, so run your own test before you commit budget.

The practical takeaway is to treat ChatGPT as an addition to a channel mix, not a replacement. If you run [Meta ads](/blog/best-ai-for-meta-ads-2026) or Google, reuse your best landing pages and your conversion events, and test ChatGPT with a small separate budget. Helena manages ChatGPT, Meta and Google ads in one workspace, so you can compare cost per conversion across channels without stitching reports together.

## ChatGPT ads vs appearing in ChatGPT answers

Paying for an ad and being recommended in an answer are separate things. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers, and that seeing an ad does not mean OpenAI endorses the advertiser.

To be cited or mentioned inside ChatGPT responses, you need generative engine optimization: clear answers, sourced facts, entity consistency and presence on the pages AI systems read. Our [GEO guide](/blog/generative-engine-optimization-geo-complete-guide-2026) covers the tactics, and our [best AI for SEO and GEO](/blog/best-ai-for-seo-geo-2026) review covers tools that track your AI visibility. Most brands will want both: ads for guaranteed placement on relevant conversations, and GEO for the unpaid mentions.

## Agency or self-serve?

OpenAI sells through three routes: its Ads Solutions team, agency and technology partners, and self-serve Ads Manager. Our view:

- **Self-serve fits** a small business or startup running a first test with a modest budget in a market where Ads Manager is open.
- **An agency or partner fits** multi-market launches, large budgets, complex product feeds, or teams without anyone who can set up the Pixel and Conversions API.
- **Helena fits** teams that want self-serve control without the daily workload. It connects to your own ChatGPT Ads account, handles setup and monitoring, and starts at $39 a month instead of an agency retainer. [See how Helena works](/ai-marketing-agent).
- **Either way, ask for your own reporting.** Make sure the account is in your name and that you can see average CPC, conversions and spend directly in Ads Manager.

If you are comparing providers, see our guide to the [best AI ad management platforms](/blog/best-ai-ad-management-platform) for how automation fits into a paid media workflow.

## Managing ChatGPT ads with AI and APIs

OpenAI publishes an Advertiser API for campaigns, ad groups, ads, insights, conversion setup, file uploads, audit logs and bulk operations. There is also a ChatGPT Ads Manager connector that lets you discover and manage ad accounts, campaigns, ad groups and ads, analyze performance, and upload creative images from inside ChatGPT.

If you already manage ad accounts through MCP servers, the same idea applies here. See our roundups of the [best MCP servers for Meta Ads](/blog/best-mcp-for-meta-ads) and the [Google Ads MCP](/blog/google-ads-mcp-2026) for how that workflow looks on other platforms. If you would rather not wire up the Advertiser API or a connector yourself, [Helena](/ai-marketing-agent) offers a ChatGPT Ads integration that works alongside its Meta Ads and Google Ads connections. For a broader view of automating paid media, see our [AI marketing agent](/ai-marketing-agent) overview.

## Common mistakes to avoid

- **Treating context hints like keywords.** They guide matching, and delivery in a specific conversation is not guaranteed.
- **Launching without conversion tracking.** You will be stuck optimizing for clicks only.
- **Judging performance too early.** Spend reporting can lag by 7 to 8 hours.
- **Sending traffic to a generic homepage.** The system evaluates your landing page, and users arrive after a detailed conversation.
- **Jumping straight to a Conversions objective.** It needs a standard conversion event with enough data behind it.
- **Expecting ads to change what ChatGPT says about you.** They do not.

## Run ChatGPT ads with Helena

ChatGPT ads reward fast iteration, and a new channel adds another dashboard to check. [Helena](/ai-marketing-agent) is built to take that workload off your plate:

- **Faster launch.** Helena drafts the campaign structure, ad copy and context hints from your landing pages, so your first campaign is ready to review in one sitting instead of a week.
- **Better relevance.** Context hints work best when they mirror the questions your buyers ask ChatGPT. Helena writes them in that language and keeps your headline and landing page aligned.
- **Cleaner measurement.** Helena adds UTM parameters and checks that conversion events are set up before spend starts, which avoids the most common mistake of launching click-only.
- **Daily monitoring.** Helena watches delivery and spend, and flags campaigns that spend without converting so you can fix them early.
- **One view across channels.** ChatGPT, Meta and Google results sit side by side, so you can decide where the next dollar goes.
- **Plain-language reports.** You get a summary of what happened and what to change, not a spreadsheet to interpret.
- **Agency-free pricing.** Plans start at $39 a month with a 3-day free trial.
